Toyota MR2 Spyder Preview
Toyota is trying to capture the topless market. As if the new Solara and Celica convertibles were not enough, the MR2 is about to be resurrected and brought into the soft-top world.
The MR2 was long a force to be reckoned with. We reviewed one back in the early 1990s, and found it to be a blast. Though somewhat impractical, with two seats and a glove compartment sized trunk, the MR2's handling was superb, and driving it was always exciting.
The new MR2 Spyder convertible is, as one would expect, a two-seater, with a mid-engine design for superior handling (and unusual acoustics), a long wheelbase for stability, and light weight to maximize acceleration and handling.
At $23,098, the Spyder will compete directly against relatively pedestrian fare such as the Avenger. It will use the same engine as the new Celica GT, with 138 hp and 125 lb-ft of torque and variable valve timing to boost responsiveness at low speeds. The result is an incredible 0-60 speed of 6.95 seconds, right in Maxima territory but with better handling and gas mileage (about 25/30). Its 70-to-0 braking space of 167 feet is more than competitive, and may save a few MR2s given their superb acceleration.
The Spyder, unlike most new cars, is rear wheel drive. It has a five-speed manual transmission - why burden a sports car with a sluxhbox?
The new MR2, like the old one, is distinctive, with side air scoops and a front end that reminds one of Porsches and late-1970s Camaros.
To keep the price low, Toyota will only allow dealer-installed options. On the other hand, standard features include a cassette/CD player, air conditioning, antilock brakes, power windows and locks, and a rear defroster.
We loved the original MR2. We suspect Toyota has another winner here, and look forward to our extended test drive. But if you want one, better order it now. Toyota says only 5,000 will be made each year.
